Paul’s Golf Swing – video coaching

Paul’s not a Pro Golfer, but he plays a mean game and has been using Golf Swing Control for a while now.

He’s been struggling with his short game and recently asked Tracy for some help.

Instead of just sending Paul an email response, Tracy suggested we do something a little different.

As a way to jumpstart activity here on the blog (and to give people a taste of what’s going to be available on our membership website) Tracy agreed to do 3 video critiques for our customers at no charge – provided they were willing to share their video coaching with everyone here.

(Two places are gone, but we’re still waiting for the third person to step up. Anyone who’s purchased the Golf Swing Control System is eligible. Contact us for information on how to submit your video)

Anyway, Paul jumped on the opportunity and sent in his video right away, along with these comments by email:

“Tracy wanted to know what I am struggling with. My Short Irons SUCK!?! I can hit a great drive and be 100 yards away from the green and end up not even hitting the green.Lots of coming over the top. Recently, I have identified that my left hip and shoulder seem to spin out a little early at impact. I have been working on during the transition (after your audio interviews) to hold my left shoulder back a little and lead with my lower body. Also, during impact, I have been trying to not let my left shoulder just blast open – trying to hold it closed.”

I’m sure anyone struggling with their short game can relate (I know I can!).

With those comments as his guide, Tracy created a video coaching session for Paul to help him identify and fix the issue he’s been having with his short irons.

You can watch Paul’s coaching session below. After you’ve watched, please — let us know what you think.

Again, thanks so much for all your support here on the blog. It’s really great for us to hear the good, the bad and the ugly of what you think about these posts and Golf Swing Control.

Here’s the video, enjoy!

    Tracy,

Great video coaching session on Paul’s swing.

Lately, I’ve developed a bit of a hook when I hit the 7 iron at about 150 yards. I think it’s because I’ve developed a much flater swing. What do you think?

I’m going to start using your suggestions about the balanced start and tilt. I’ll let you know how that goes.

    Thanks

    Vince

Thank you Tracy for the very good instructions, I am practicing the set up routine and find that it has really improved my swing with any club with confidence.
    A simple and practical exercise.
    Thanks again.

Hi I found your video informative and helpful. What I have been doing lately with my driver is taking a wider stance with my feet, playing the ball forward, and taking a low and wide swing away from the ball, I feel this set-up makes me put more weight on my right foot and transition to the left foot on the downswing much easier. Thanks for all your info

This was the most comprehensive and simply explained. Thanks a lot.

Most people like myself go througha lot of heartaches and poor scores because of “past tapes” and poor habits. What I saw today will need a lot of practice and give guidance to my continuing efforts to get improvements, rather than learning thru experimentations without a guiding principle.

Tracy Reed, I just came across your teaching and i cant wait to work with you. You have a very knowledgable understanding of the golf swing. It is a pleasure to hear your critiques and instruction that promotes a fuller understanding of the golf swing. Every golfer swing is different but all have commonalities that relate to the golf swing and not the individual. Each individual brings their physical abilities to perform the golf swing. That is why all golfswings are different yet contain similarities. It is good to see and hear someone that is able to give constructive instruction to individuals who want to learn to be better golfers. I also hope that the individuals that seek this information, learn to give to others their time as youve given of your time. I am not just talking about golf either. Thank you Tracy Reed for helping.

    David,
The wrist delay happens without thought as long as the body is driving the downswing in the proper oreder; that is lower body first, driving the upper body, which drives the arms and hands through connection.

    Gordon,
If you read the post, “Getting your swing back,” The drill is mentioned in there. Once you experience it and take close notice of the feel, you’ll be able to transfer it to your normal golf swing.

    Joseph,
It may, but since you are using “Natural” golf, you have to try it and see.

    Hi Tracy,
I just started to study your ebook and the videos. They are just great, the best I have ever had! Reason: they are simple, easy to understand and adopt to different situation – answering a lot of questions I have had unanswered so far. Thanks for that!
I need though your advice on the mid game: 100-150 yards where most of the troubles happen to me – especially if there are some hazards in between. Problems start with choosing the right club depending on the surface – I think. I would appreciate your idea for choosing the right club (including hybrids) for fairway, rough, bunker from these distances.
    Thanks again,
    Csaba (from Hungary)

    Tracy,
The video is very revealing and your approach is excellent. However is there any way to take the video in such a way that the swing motion can be slowed down for better analysis, particularly in the critical transition phase. I would like to find this out before ordering your dvd.
    Many thanks,
    Eric

Wow!! I have just watched two of your videos here on your blog and have received more information from them than I’ve received in years from various other teaching pros. I can’t wait to get out to the range a apply the new found applications. I wich you were here or near here so I could get some personal help from you.

Tremendous job of explaining golf and the golf swing. Thanks a bunch.

    Tracy,

I purchased your DVD and the Manual.

It has added a great deal to my understanding of the Golf Swing.

I am no aware of dynamic balance , and now understand the reasons for the strong fades or draws.

My swing is a lot smoother , thanks to the in depth explanation of the Transition !

The videos on your blog do add yet another domension to your golf instructions.

My shots are now a lot straighter and longer.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Tracy
Great analysis, really useful. I am having touble separating my abs from hips on downswing. Are there any exercises u can recommend to help me get in shape to achieve this move. Will keeping ball of left foot on ground longer help?
    Mny thanks

    Thanks Tracy,

I’ve learned more from your analysis of Paul’s swing than Sergio or Tiger because Paul’s is the closest swing to mine (shame). I’ve been a member of your system for a few years now, but I think this work with Kory has and will have the biggest effect on golfers of all abilities because it’s visual and you explain thing so well. I think one of the biggest issues with the average golfer is that they generally have no idea what their swing looks like and that any instruction they receive they tend to overdo. I used to have a bad reverse pivot but then started swaying to compensate. This blog is great, I think your analyses are unique, keep it coming and you’ll get everyone to drop at least 5 shots. I shot a 69 two years ago after working on your system for 4 months solid.

You are right about my grip. I cross hand or reverse grip. Over the years
people tried to get me to change to the left side of the ball. But I cannnot
hit to save my life. Nothing hurts when I swing. As a stated before I can play
well using my irons, but sometime the driver will leave in the cold, as I will
get duck hooks to the left and heavy fade to the right. Any Ideas to work
    out the these problems.
    thanks

    Nic,
The snap hook in your case sounds like you’re getting your arms stuck behind the body during the downswing. That causes the club to strike the ball on more of an inside out direction and lots of hook spin.

There are three places this can happen. Usually, the body gets ahead of the ball at impact, which effectively moves the ball way back in the stance and causes the club to strike the ball with an open clubface from in to out.

Another is loss of connection during the backswing or downswing. The arms have to stay with the body during the swing or the snap hook can happen.

The other place is the lower body. If your weight gets to the heel of the front foot too soon during the downswing, the hips will open too fast and there is no way for the upper body to catch up. Yo’ll have to look and feel for both parts to see which is most responsible. Keeping the weight under the ball of the forward foot until impact during the downswing will control the first and third areas I pointed out.

    Ryan,
I’m not clear as to what is wrong with your grip. It sounds like you are hitting with a reverse grip. If that is the case, it’s not really a bad thing. I have met two other golfers who used the grip and they both hit the ball a long way. If you add the element of balance, I don’t know why you would ever need to change it. The only thing I worry about is the possibility of hurting yourself with the grip, but if not, and if it works, don’t worry about it.

Let me know if this is the case because I’m still not real clear if it is.
    Regards,
    Tracy

Greaty to get instruction at this time of the year, as we have around 7 inches
    of snow were I live.
My only problem with the instruction is that hand prositions and angle won’t
work into the way I swing a club. As a kid learned to play with a right handed
set of clubs and not knowing I was a left handed golfer. I am now 44 and able to carry approx. 12 handicap. I have gone to work with golf pro and I leave the not knowing how I can hit a ball the way I swing. They have said the don’t see anything wrong you as long as they don’t look at my hand. Beside changing my grip from right and to left is there anything you could think of to help my swing.
I hit the ball with a small fade at the end. I am better with my iron’s, than my drive.
    Hope to hear from you

    Ryan

G’day Tracy, thanks for the great video analyses, this was just what I’ve been wanting to watch. Along with the manual and DVD’s my understanding of my golf swing is light years ahead of what it was.
I can see from Paul’s video that I have a lot of the same swing faults, head moving forward of ball during transition, weight moving to heel at impact, and without your instruction I would still be wondering what I was doing wrong.
With the Tiger video it showed me that the transition is linked to the downswing and not something separate from it, this has helped with my visualization of the process.
A question; I’d been having trouble with snap hooking and/or pushing my drives, especially under pressure, and I saw a pro about it. After looking at me he suggested that I wasn’t swinging far enough back and my arms were getting cramped on the downswing. I have worked on this since and lo and behold it seems to work, i’m hitting my drives mostly a lot longer and straighter. Why is this so, I suspect it helps me stay behind the ball for longer and has nothing to do with my arms.
    Thanks Nic.

    Stan,
At what point in the swing are the hands behind the ball? If it is stance, then it is incorrect because the clubs were not designed to be used that way.
Hogan supinated to to adjust for the flat swing that was caused by keeping the right elbow glued to the body during the backswing. If you watch enough pros, you’ll see that the butt end gets there first.

    Todd,
The right heel coming up or staying down is a result of other parts of the swing. It doesn’t have to be either way.

    Regards,
    Tracy

    hi tracy,

thanks for the great vid commentary. from your manual…shouldnt the right heel be off the ground at club impact with the ball?

    cheers,

    todd

Tracy – I had been taught that up to the four iron (3w – 4 iron) my hands should be behind the ball and by the time I get to the 4 iron it should be even – is that incorrect ? it is different from what you are saying.

Also Hogan talks about having the lead hand aiming at the target at contact (supination) does bringing the butt end of the club accomplish this? (with the lower body leading of course) and should I worry about this?

    G,
The only thing I can recommend for your feet are orthotics. I’ve worn them since I was in the Army and both of my sons wear them for flat feet. As for feeling the bottoms of the feet, you have to train yourself to become more aware of them. The sensors are there and sending the signals already, you just need to tap into the network and start using them.

    Allan,
If your short game is the where the shanks usually occur, it’s because you are using only your arms to make the shots. Even with the shortest chip, your body should be doing most of the work. The arms and body must work together or the dreaded shank will show it’s ugly head.

    Gary,
Since you are teeing the driver up, you have choices about how you want to hit the ball. You can keep it low or hit it high. With the driver you can hit down through the ball, sweep the ball, or hit up on the ball depending on the height of the ball when teed up.

In addition, placing the ball forward or back in the stance, which is basically placing it forward or behind the hands at setup, will change whether you hit up, down or sweep the drive. All of these variables make the driver more versatile, and yet more difficult to use because there are more decisions to make.

Try it out on a driving range by moving the ball forward or back in your stance. Try teeing it higher or lower. You’ll find many different ways to hit a driver, many of which you may or may not like. Get it down to a few different shots you can use for different situations and your driving game will have more confidence.

    Thanks for the questions guys.
    Hit’m well,
    Tracy

Hi Tracy, You mentioned that the hands should be ahead of the club face in the set up except for the driver. Where should they be for the driver?

    many thanks

Great analysis again Tracy. I play off a 5 handicap and I would rather play a full 8 iron to a green than a shot from 100 yards in – the reason…I developed the dreaded Shank about 4 years ago and it only comes when I’m hitting a ball from less than, say, 80 yards into the green. Why does that happen?
All the best, and thanks for the blog!

I wanted to thank you for a very informative sequence of analysis.
You asked for feedback and mentioned biomechanics as an area. I can relate to Paul’s lack of tilt…I have been doing the same but more pronouncec i think..so much so that my head leans even more to the right than Paul’s during the backswing..but I’m working on it.
On the biomechanics side you mentioned the importance of the weight distribution and the balls of the feet.
I have had fallen arches since birth and use insoles. I often struggle with my balance and wonder if this is due to the fallen arches or poor swing technique.
My question is is there something people with my condition should do to improve their golf swing (podiatrist says that ther arch will never recover)

many thanks and again great info.
