In Golf, it’s not “What” but “How” that makes you better

I want to thank everyone for their kind comments here on the blog.

As I was reading them, a thought stopped me in my tracks. I realized I was falling into a trap that many instructors are caught up in and taking many innocent golfers with me, so let me apologize and get you back on track before too much damage is done.

Reading the comments on the video of Sergio, I realized that there is an underlying issue that seems to always creep in and I wanted to nip it in the bud. It’s probably my fault because in my analysis, I am talking too much about WHAT Sergio does and not enough about why or most importantly, HOW to fix this issue. I’d like to correct that now so golfers understand the real goal of the Ultimate Golf System.

When you look for help and an instructor tells you that you need to swing the club a certain way, do you ever notice another question in the back of your mind?

The teacher may correct your backswing or some other part of your swing and you hit it well during the lesson, but the next day or maybe next week, you can’t seem to repeat the correction. What question goes through your mind?

Maybe you’re out on the course and you were hitting the ball well on the range, but now you feel as if you have a small tree in your hand rather than a golf club. What is the real question behind the frustration?

The question is HOW do I know if I am doing it right so I can repeat it!

If the instructor is beside you, he can place you in the right positions. If you are looking in a mirror,or a video of your golf swing, many times you can see what’s wrong, but on the golf course, how can you really know?

You see, when things go bad on the golf course, it’s easy to blame the golf swing, because that’s what you use to hit the golf ball. The swing is the problem, but too often, golfers look at their own golf swing as if it is a machine they are operating rather than their own body which is controlled by their own mind.

So instead of asking HOW DO I make it work, many golfers go to the instructor for a lesson to “fix” the swing as if it was an object, something that is detached from the golfer in some way.

So, what if this instruction doesn’t work?

Well gee, there are more types of golf swings to try… pick one. Every instructor has another theory about what you must do to swing the club in a more efficient manner, and they design more swing types every year. This year it’s the Stack and Tilt. Ultimately, someone gets the system to work and voila, it gets credibility!

Hey, I went through this myself for a few years before I got wise.

I woke up one morning and saw the weight loss commercial where the strange looking girl was yelling, “Stop the insanity!” I didn’t need to lose weight, but the message made sense.

I was doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

That was insane! I stopped and analyzed the situation and realized that I wasn’t the only golfer who had fallen into this elaborate trap. I looked for answers… for a long time.

Golf Swing Control was never about making a certain “type” of golf swing.

If you follow the routines, your own golf swing emerges. It is the swing meant for your body. It might be one plane or two plane. It might not look pretty, although it usually does, but it works for the individual golfer given their individual situation.

Imagine having three vertebrae in your spine fused.

Do you think your swing will look like the pros?

But if you can play consistently in the 70′s or low 80′s, would you be happy, given the condition? The golfer I’m talking about certainly is, because until I helped him, golf was painful and frustrating. We used routines to find what his body wanted to do within his limitations and now he can enjoy golf.

Everyone has some sort of limitations. Every person is slightly different in their body build. Because of that no two golf swings are alike, and they shouldn’t be. The golf swing has to come from within your body. So the question is, HOW do you find that magic swing?

The golf swing starts in the mind but it happens in the body.

You know what you want to do, but the question is HOW do you know if you are doing it right? To answer that question there has to be a link between the mind and the body that will tell you whether you are doing it right or not. That link is Dynamic Balance Feedback.

You might argue for muscle feedback (or muscle memory), but as muscles get used, their state changes. They go from stiff to loose and back to stiff. They go from cold to warm to overheated. As their state changes, the signals they send to the brain change, so the feedback needs constant adjustments in interpretation if it is to be used accurately.

The Balance sensors in your body, on the other hand, respond to GRAVITY.

They guide the body to react when you are out of balance. If you trip, your body responds instantly. Balance feedback is consistent and reliable and it is the connection between the body and the brain that will answer the real questions about your swing that is causing all of the frustration.

This is important but nobody is saying it. To play golf well, you have to know what’s happening in your body first. You need a way to “check in” and find out if you’re making the natural swing for you. Balance Feedback gives you a way to do this.

If you have Golf Swing Control System, make sure you start using balance feedback for every shot. If you don’t have a copy of Golf Swing Control or The Ultimate Golf System, ask a pro about balance feedback. If he or she can’t answer your question, come back and look at the free videos we have provided for you and watch closely for the references to balance.

You can start working on your balance by viewing these free videos.

There’s more to come, but this is where the secret to unbelievable golf begins. Stay tuned…

Hit’m well,

Tracy

Great presentation of the Why and How the swing works for each individual. I’ve taken countless instructions from the best of the top 100 instructors and find that your system is the best I’ve ever used. The critical areas of balance, set up, back swing and transition are simply the best way to learn to swing in this wonderful game. I’ve been working on your new learning for less than two months, using your videos and manual and have produced a consistent golf swing that I can call on when my thoughts seem to wonder during a game. In the process I have made more consistently good shots and better bad shots… I.e. not bad enough to still not have a recovery for a par or bogey. The poor shots seem to happen most often for me when i neglect to make a complete shoulder turn during the backswing. The result is a push or a pull draw. In an effort to get even more length than your system has already given me, I tried adding more power during the transition and found that I got less instead, as you stated earlier. I’ve added 30 yards to my drives and 10 to 15 in my irons. My handicap has gone from a from a weak 11 to a strong 8. I expect to continue to work on the swing technics, while I learn the importance of the mental side.
Thank you for simplifying the confusion I’ve had from too much “What” to understanding your basics principles of “why things work as they do. I’m an engineer and appreciate the natural law of gravity and how it can affect your mind and swing.

the best swing video i have ever seen. In fact yesterday I played 9 holes with the things displayed in this video and shot 41 at Lin coln hills. I know it will get better. Thanks to Tracy Reed, and Tiger Woods.

    Hi Tracey,
Like Murry, I have 3 vertegrae fused in my lower back and also have a big problem of coming over the top. I love this great game, but I need a big push in the right direction. I have been working on your system for about 2 months now. Before I used your system I was using mainly my arms to make the swing, due to my back, but after watching your DVD’s and reading your book I have been working hard at changing that. The problem that I am running into is that I can take great practice swings but as soon as I set up to the ball, for some reason my mind and my body go back to the old way of swinging. I have tried everything that I can think of to change this but it is proving to be harder than I thought. I know I am missing something, but I can’t figure this thing out. Can you please help me?

P.S. Can you send me the routines that you gave the guy with similar back problems? I think this will help with some of my problems as well.

    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi Tracy
I have at least 2 fused vertebrae down the bottom, condition called DISH. I have your program (lost DVD 1 tho, need to buy a replacement), and I am interested what you got the guy to do described above who had a similar condition. I am on a 22, left handed, aged 60 and I feel my problems are too fast a transition and a bottom left hand that takes over if I try to hard to cock my wrists more to compensate my lack of backswing length.
I have hit more straight shots using your program but am still inconsistent, particularly when I tire
    Help!
    Thanks
    Murray

    Lillie,
Great stuff! Keep working on it. Champions always win in their mind long before they win on the course. As you work with visualization, you’ll find you are actually using it more than you know. Simply being more aware of what your mind is doing will improve your ability to use it better. Kind of a snowball effect.
    Regards,
    Tracy

For years I have read and believed in The magic of Believing. a book I learned about in Mexico. As you say seeing the mental picture and knowing I was going to win a tournament, it has made me win. Thanks so much for reminding me of this fact. I enjoy your program very much. Thank you

    Carlos,
Keeping the head down through impact is somewhat of a myth. I say this because in a majority of cases it is either a problem with posture or a sequence error during the swing that brings the head up. The head coming up, “peeking” too soon during a shot is an indicator of another problem. If you think about it, keeping the head down is similar to a doctor treating symptoms of a disease without looking for a cure. The doctor must find the cause to cure the disease, and likewise, a golfer must find the cause to correct the head coming up.

As far as the grip, the setup routine that is on my website (www.golfswingcontrol.com/setuproutine.html) goes through the grip and setup to find what works for your body, since every person is built a little differently. Without a logical way of finding what will work for your body, looking at knuckles and thumbs is a guess until you take into affect the natural position of your arms and build of your body.

    Hit’m well,
    Tracy

watched your analysis of Tiger & Sergio… & I am eager to apply as much as possible to my swing. My biggest challenge has been keeping my head down through the downswing. What I’ve told myself lately (& it seems to work pretty good) is that I need to keep my face (& eyes) in the same relative location over the ball all through the swing. Sort of like anchor (w/my eyes) it in place.
another issue for me is that Ive realized that I can hit the ball very straight when I set up with the club face turned in about 20 degrees. My rt. thumb is just slightly back of perpendicular & my lft. thumb is all the way behind the club in the pit usually of my rt. palm.
I can also hit the ball well with the traditional grip.. with the thumb pits lined up with the arm pits. Or more or less as if both hands were about 20 degrees off the swing plane as the ball is addressed.
Should I ditch one of these grips/swings & how do I decide? Thanks & Merry Christmas Carlos PS I don’t think your blog etc. is not completely altruistic but its pretty close!

    Shawn,
The weight during the downswing is the hardest to sense because your mind is on the club path through impact. You’re trying to do two things at once with different senses and you must train your mind to make it happen. You have to use two different practice methods and alternate them. You need to practice both with a club, hitting balls, and without a club, but rather a weighted club like a momentus to increase your sensitivity of the feel in your feet.

I use the momentus away from the course to practice my weight awareness. During the downswing with the momentus, you need to imagine the ball and the club coming through impact as a secondary sensation while you feel the weight as a primary sensation, so it is the opposite from the scene on the course where you see the club path as a primary sensation and have to feel for the weight as a secondary sensation.

Since there are primary (more important) and secondary sensations at this point of the swing, and since they are opposite in the different practice modes (practicing with and without a ball), you must practice both so you get used to reminding your self to be aware of both sensations.

Ultimately, you need to add a reminder into your preshot routine before the practice swings to make sure you are aware of both sensations. If you do it during the practice swings, you’ll probably do it during the actual shot.

What should happen is that the feel of the weight during the downswing should be shifted in your mind to a picture and that picture added to the picture of your movement and impact. Once that happens, both parts can be added to your pre-shot movie, but you must practice doing so.

Let me know if this makes sense.

Funny thing, so much more goes into preparing for a shot mentally than ever goes into the shot itself.

    Hit’m well,
    Tracy

    Tracy,

I have a question that I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while now but have hesitated due to the lack of time I’ve been able devote to my game. I have had your Golf Swing Control manual for a couple of years now and just recently purchased your DVDs. In the past, I’ve not been able to work on the technique very often; however, lately I have had the opportunity to work on my swing and I have to say that your instruction is becoming more clear every time I practice. I find myself relating back to the manual in my mind to fix areas that I know are not right and all of a sudden the light comes on and I say to myself “that’s what Tracy meant”! It has been of great benefit to me and hopefully my game will begin to show the results…That is if it ever stops snowing:(

My question is, what is the trick to becoming aware or sensing where the weight is in the feet during the downswing itself? That is, I know where the weight is at setup, during the backswing and at follow-through, but how can you tell or become aware of where it is during the downswing? I am able to tell when I’m out-of-balance from where the weight is at follow-through, but what I’m confused about is how to determine if I will end up out-of-balance. Is this a legitimate question or am I just missing some of the detail?

    Thanks again,

    Shawn Bradshaw

Hello from sunny (not) North Wales, UK. I’ve been playing golf for 18 months, I’m 46 and my handicap is now 20. I’ve been practicing all the things you’ve been teaching on this blog, especially the set up and visualizing going through the ball with the butt end of the club and I have been striking the ball very well and unusually for me they have been going straight. My point is I’ve just realised how important the mental side of this game is. This morning I played the first six holes very well and my approach shot to the seventh was struck very well but just caught the top of the greenside bunker and rolled back in. My friends all said I was unlucky as it was a good shot. I then proceeded to take four attempts to get it out. I lost my temper and instantly forgot everything I’d learned from your blog. The rest of the round went from bad to worse. I feel the more ingrained in my mind the set up and swing become I’ll find it easier to get over bad shots and stop beating myself up about them.

    Cheers

    Jimbo
